The Difference Between Hair Trimmer and Hair Clipper

At first glance, the trimmer vs clipper debate may seem irrelevant since both devices are designed to cut men’s hair. But, although these devices are very similar they are very different and designed for very specific tasks.

A clipper is designed to cut longer hair. This will usually be the hair on your head and the cut will not be close to the skin. There are different types of trimmers, but they are all designed for light trimming and detail work.

In summary, clippers cut longer and bulkier hair and trimmers cut short and finer hair. A clipper can cut hair at various lengths and trimmers tend to have tools for finer detailing. The trimmer has thin blades that may be used with attachments and clippers certainly use guides and attachments to keep those thicker blades away from your skin.

When you visit a barber, they typically start with clippers to remove the bulk of your hair and get the hair length that you want. Next, the barber would probably switch to a trimmer to trim around the ears and neck and to create details. The trimmer can make safer and shorter cuts that a clipper can’t make with even the shortest guide fitted.

Blade Length
When you look at the trimmer blades, they have smaller spiked teeth that are designed to move easily through
shorter hair. Clipper blades are larger, they are arranged in pairs, the top blade is fed hair by the bottom blade and cutting is conducted as it moves. Both clippers and trimmers typically have blades made of ceramic or
stainless steel.

Attachments
Clippers typically come with plastic or metal guards in various lengths up to around 1.5”. The best clippers even have attachments to trim the ears, nose and beard. Trimmers don’t use attachments because the length of the blade is too short and they are a more specific tool.
